A couple weeks ago, I got a call from Amy. It was a Monday and close to midnight. We chatted, just filling each other in on the events of our days, as usual. About thirty minutes into the conversation she mentioned that she and Yo might be going to a Cardinals game in St. Louis the following night. She said something about how awesome it would be if I could go with them. I agreed that it would be awesome, but didn't even consider the possibility of this happening. I'm home for the summer and home is roughly 7 hours from St. Louis.
How disappointing. Right?
Wrong! Less than an hour later, after lots of begging to my parents and last-minute planning, we had it all worked out.
Yeah... we're good.
It took me hours to fall asleep that night because I was just so excited. I managed to get about 5 hours of sleep before waking up, packing, and getting ready. After a 3-hour drive that seemed to drag on forever, I made it to Evansville around 1:00 in the afternoon.
I met Kyle for lunch at Cici's where we stuffed our faces and talked for an hour. Then I met up with Yo and Ryan and followed them to Amy's house in Illinois, about an hour's drive from Evansville. We spent close to an hour getting ready and hanging out at her parents' store, and then we were off to St. Louis!
The game didn't start until 7:00 that evening and we got to St. Louis kind of early, which gave us time to walk around and sightsee a little before going into the stadium.
Shortly before 7 we entered Busch Stadium and found our seats... which were pretty awesome, if you don't mind my saying. Thanks, Yo!
Now, I'll admit- I am NOT a big baseball fan. I don't know anything about the sport, let alone the teams who were playing. That Cardinals shirt I was wearing? It's Amy's! The only reason I was so excited about this trip was because I would get to see Kyle, Amy, Yo, and Ryan. Because of this, I was really surprised once the game started and I discovered that I was actually enjoying myself. I had so much fun!
(Cardinals won, by the way.)
We got back to Amy's house really late Tuesday night. The boys dropped us off and headed back to Evansville while Amy and I settled in for one of our good old fashioned roomie bonding sleepovers. (Oh, how I had missed that!) We lay in bed talking and laughing until we were too tired to follow the conversation anymore... then it was sleepy time.
We woke up early the next morning and said our goodbyes, which wasn't so hard knowing that we would see each other at Hannah's wedding in less than a month. Amy went to help out at her parents' store and I drove back to Kyle's apartment in Evansville. The plan was to spend a couple of hours hanging out with him before heading back to Columbus, but a couple of hours turned into quite a few hours and I ended up staying in Evansville until after 4:00 that afternoon.
Looking back, I'm still in awe that this whole plan worked out. I remember how I scoffed and thought, "Yeah... I wish!" when Amy first mentioned me going to the game. It's pretty awesome how everything came together so quickly, and for that I am still extremely grateful. I had missed everybody so much, especially my wonderful roommate/best friend (even though we had only been apart for 11 days). That little trip was the perfect cure to the little bout of Evansville-homesickness I was experiencing.
